When PNG is the right output
PNG is a good choice for interface screenshots, diagrams, flat-color artwork and images with transparent edges. It saves decoded pixels without the new block artifacts associated with JPEG compression. A photograph can become much larger as PNG, even if the visible quality is no better. Compare the size with a JPEG or WebP export when a page needs to load quickly.
This converter accepts still JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 20 MB and a decoded image up to 40 megapixels. Your browser must be able to decode the source. Animated WebP is flattened to one frame; use the original animation when motion matters.
What changes during conversion?
The browser draws the selected image to a canvas and exports a new PNG download. Alpha transparency from a transparent PNG or WebP can remain transparent. A JPEG has no alpha channel, so its white or colored background stays visible; simply choosing PNG does not remove it. Use a background removal workflow for a truly plain edge-connected background.
Metadata, layers and the original color profile may not survive a canvas export. A fuzzy JPEG label remains fuzzy in PNG because the source detail was lost earlier. Keep your original, open the downloaded PNG, and check edges over both light and dark backgrounds before publishing.
